Week 6 Case Study: Sacks and Aaron Rodgers' Rating

One of the difference between my passer rating and the traditional rating is that my takes sack yardage into account. The decision to include sacks was based largely on this article at pro-football-reference.com.  Basically, Jason Lisk from PFR found that, among quarterback's who changed teams, sack percentage was the stat that stayed most consistent when a player’s teammates changed.

This is bad news for Aaron Rodgers.  Among players in the top 15 in my rankings, Aaron Rodgers has taken, by far, the biggest hit (no pun intended) as a result of the sack adjustment. Rodgers has lost 5.1 points on his rating (his rating would be 6.0 without the sack adjustment - it is 0.95 with the adjustment).
Rodgers sack adjustment is almost double the next highest adjustment - Big Ben with a 2.9 point sack adjustment.

However, if you look at the last column in the table below, you'll notice that Rodgers is the only player in the top 15 with a significant impact to his ranking. Rodgers currently ranks 14th in my rating. If the adjustment were removed, he would rank 4th (see the last two columns). Nobody else comes close to that type of impact.

The intent of the sack adjustment was to have a small impact - unless a player performed particularly well (see Matt Ryan) or poorly in this area. I think the my rating has done a pretty good job in that area.

Even if you think this adjustment unfairly impacts Rodgers, consider that the traditional rating doesn't punish him at all for taking so many sacks. Rodgers has lost as many sack yards as he has attempts. I understand it may not be all his fault - hence the small weight. But, he has to bear some responsibility.
